Damien's journey at Yiramalay

Damien began at Yiramalay as a Year 10 student in 2022. While he had consistent school attendance at a variety of schools until enrolment at Yiramalay, it was evident that the traditional education system was not a good fit for Damien.

His focus was on getting a job and being independent. Since enrolment there has been significant growth in Damien’s understanding of the power of community and he has appreciated having time to focus on his connection to country and culture.

In Year 10, Damien was one of those students who disappeared at duty time; Damien is now helping out whenever required and has grown into a strong Year 12 leader at the school. In early 2024 he was part of the small group that visited Canberra, and it was great to see him making conversation with politicians. However, it is at Yiramalay and on country that he is at his best; he is proud of the school and is always keen to introduce himself and share his story with visitors.

Work Experience at Hutchinson Builders

While initially he focussed on a career as a ranger, more recently Damien has been drawn to the construction industry. He had his first day of work on site with Hutchinson Builders, and feedback from the Hutchinson team was that they would give him a job anytime he wanted one.

Job offer at GenOffGrid

Damien was offered a job with GenOffGrid when they were on site visiting our recently completed Solar Farm. The senior visitors from GenOffGrid were quick to comment on Damien’s confidence and charm.

He recently accepted the job offer as an electrical apprenticeship for 2025 and has already completed his first couple of days of the apprenticeship with them, prior to returning to Yiramalay to complete his Year 12.

Congratulations Damien!
